Is this the head of someone we should know?

Is it a portrait, a self-portrait, the decoration for a church, a funeral monument, a god, a devil, a man, a woman, a child, an adult, an alien?

Who made it, a young person or a skilled artist?

Who found it, when, where… and why did he/she put it in a museum?

Is it badly made?

Why is it not finished?

Is it finished, perhaps?

What is its value?

When was it made (is it pre-Romanesque, ancient, modern)?

Where was it made (in Africa, China, or here in the Cantal maybe)?

When he made it, what were the sculptor’s thoughts or feelings?

How was it made, in what circumstances, with what tools, in what type of rock?

Why was it lying on top of a metal cabinet in the museum’s reserve; what was it waiting for?

What do you think about it?

We have chosen to include this head in our exhibition because it is very beautiful. And it makes you think: it is everything (ancient, modern, male and female, human and divine, etc.) or nothing (unfinished, of little value, ugly, etc.), depending on your point of view. This head is universal and mysterious...

The person who made it was trying, somehow, to express something about what it is to be oneself, to be human. As such, it is the central piece of our exhibition since it echoes all the other works of art around it…

Cette tête est-elle sensé appartenir à quelqu’un de connu ?

Est-ce un portrait, un autoportrait, une décoration pour une église, un monument funéraire, un dieu, un ange, un diable, un homme, une femme, un enfant, un adulte, une créature extraterrestre?

Qui l'a fabriqué : un sculpteur averti ou un enfant?

Qui l'a trouvé, quand, où… et pourquoi l’a-t-il mis dans un musée ?

Est-elle «mal faite»?

Pourquoi est-elle inachevée?

Est-elle en fait inachevée?

Quelle est sa valeur?

Quand a-t-elle été fabriquée (est-elle préromane, ancienne, moderne…)?

Où a-t-elle été fabriquée (en Afrique, en Chine, ici peut-être…)?

Quand il l’a fabriqué, que ressentait ou pensait le sculpteur?

Comment a-t-elle été fabriquée, dans quelles circonstances, avec quels outils, dans quel type de pierre?

Pourquoi cette tête était-elle couchée sur son côté en haut d'un placard métallique dans les fonds du musée ; qu’attendait-elle?

Quel est votre ressenti par rapport à cette sculpture?

Nous avons choisi d'inclure cette sculpture dans l'exposition parce qu'elle est très belle. Aussi, elle fait réfléchir : elle est, selon son point de vue, tout (ancienne, nouvelle, masculin et féminin, humain et divin, belle...) ou rien (inachevée, de peu de valeur, laide...). Elle est universelle et mystérieuse.

La personne qui l’a fabriqué tentait, tant bien que mal, d’exprimer quelque chose sur ce que c'est que d’être soi-même, d'être humain. En tant que telle, elle est la pièce centrale de notre exposition, car elle fait écho à toutes les œuvres d'art autour…
